Do Something Different

The universe chants this phrase to me and in this moment I am its conduit sharing this phrase with you. This phrase is one among a collection of three word phrases which are linguistically unique yet all express the same three ideas.

At their core, these ideas are Truth, Love, and Power. Steve Pavlina, a longtime blogger, delves into these facets of life and their connections with each other in his book Personal Development for Smart People. The book frames truth, love, and power as pillars for personal growth.

Visakan Veerasamy, a longtime blogger, captures the essence of truth, love, and power with the term "friendly ambitious nerd." Friendliness is an expression of love, ambition is an expression of power, and nerdiness is an expression of truth. The phrase serves as a schelling point online and offline for those who resonate with it.

Tasshin Fogleman, a longtime blogger, provides his version of truth, love, and power as "love, curiosity, empowerment." Tasshin embodies such a deep commitment to these ways of being that they are integral to his bodhisattva vows. They are also the names of the three departments of The Service Guild, his funprofessional working co-operative.

Here is an explanation of what it means to do something different and how the phrase maps onto truth, love, and power:

Do

Do is a verb. It is an action. I love woo as much as the next magician, but I believe that thoughts are insufficient to manifest the outcomes one desires in life.

You must take action. You get to do things in order to signal to those around you that you are serious about what you want, which in turn attracts help in service of what you want. What you do communicates much more about you than what you say. Be who you are by doing what you want to do.

When you feel love for another person, you do loving things for them. You might aspire to express love as often as possible to others and to yourself through your actions. In this way, to do is to love.

Something

Something, some specific thing. Not "anything" and not "whatever." Something is intentional. It is informed by observation and conscious awareness of the present situation, as well as reflections on what has and has not worked in the past.

Something is also not "somethings." Doing many things simultaneously in pursuit of what you want dilutes the quality of each thing. Figure out the one something in the present that feels like the best shot at getting you what you want in the short-term and in the long-term, and give it your full attention.

Every intentionally chosen something is informed by the truth: a fair, honest, and accurate understanding of what is and what is not. Intentional somethings do not arise from self-deception, as that speaks to a level of unawareness. Aspirationally, every something that you do aligns with the truth.

Different

Different is difficult because it lives in the land of the unfamiliar where optimal processes and guaranteed outcomes are unknown. Different is courageous because it shows a willingness to embrace uncertainty. Different is intelligent because it means that you're not willing to settle for the results you've been getting, you want better results.

Power sits on the other side of doing something different. Different means that it hasn't been done before. Others may do it but not exactly the same as you do it. This means that the outcomes cannot be anticipated, they might be better than anyone could predict. This unique access to those outstanding outcomes is how you access power.

Loopy, a longtime blogger, shares an action-oriented frame of truth, love, and power with the phrase "do something different" in the essay you're reading right now. If the phrase ignites a burning desire in you, you are encouraged to act on it immediately.
